December 18, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of Russia’s Duma, has met with U\u0142adzimir Andrej\u010danka, speaker of the Belarusian National Assembly’s lower house, the Duma’s website reported on December 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lasha Ashuba and Alan Alborov, parliamentary speakers from Georgia’s breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, respectively, also attended the meeting, it noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The speakers reportedly discussed inter-parliamentary cooperation and economic relations between Russia, Belarus, Abkhazia and South Ossetia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On December 18, Andrej\u010danka is expected to participate in the session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia in Moscow, the House of Representatives press office reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2008, Russia attacked Georgia and supported separatist movements in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus has not yet officially joined the small list of countries that recognize Georgia\u2019s breakaway region of Abkhazia as an independent state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In September 2022, following talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Sochi, \u0141uka\u0161enka visited Abkhazia without notifying Georgian authorities. He met with Abkhazia’s separatist ruler Aslan Bzhania who would visit Minsk a few months later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Georgia has criticized the Belarusian ruler\u2019s contacts with the breakaway region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
