{"id":56255,"date":"2023-12-18T22:09:43","date_gmt":"2023-12-18T19:09:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/?post_type=articles&#038;p=56255"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:40:57","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:40:57","slug":"only-14-percent-of-respondents-read-books-in-belarusian-poll","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/56255\/","title":{"rendered":"Only 14 percent of respondents read books in Belarusian \u2013 poll"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>December 18, <em>Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> A mere 14 percent of respondents in Belarusian cities say they read books in Belarusian, as the overwhelming majority prefers titles in Russian, according to a Political Sphere poll for August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost 100 percent said they read books or listened to their audio versions in the language of the former empire, said Andrej Kazakievi\u010d, the head of the think tank, presenting the findings today in Vilnius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Six percent also absorbed literature in English, and 1 percent \u2013 in other languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The market is dominated by classical and contemporary fiction,&#8221; Kazakievi\u010d told <em>Pozirk<\/em>. &#8220;It is clear that just a handful of books are translated into Belarusian. If you want to read classical or modern authors, you should either use English or, in the Belarusian context, Russian.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He argued that this was not an exclusively Belarusian problem, as in some countries it was easier to find popular titles in English than to wait for them to be translated. However, he admitted that Belarus was a special case. &#8220;It will be years, if not decades, before a translation into Belarusian is published, if ever.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the online survey, 48 percent of respondents read or listened to books daily or weekly. Eighteen percent did so at least once a couple of weeks\/a month. About a third \u2013 only several times a year or &#8220;never in the past year.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than a half consumed contemporary fiction; 48 percent, classical fiction; and 15 percent, history books. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was followed by 14 percent for academic and professional titles, 12 percent for popular books about politics and society, and 11 percent for popular literature on nature and technology. Eleven percent were interested in teaching aids, and about a fifth said they read other books.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>December 18, Pozirk.
