December 26, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The United Nations is ending joint projects with the Belarusian Red Cross (BRC) and plans to continue humanitarian activities in the country via other organizations, Buro Media<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The international organization is considering “other NGOs” as an alternative to the BRC and may even work “directly with hospitals.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UN office in Belarus said it is exploring alternative ways to provide vulnerable communities with essential support and ensure the continuity of humanitarian assistance during a transition period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Citing the BRC’s 2022 report, Buro Media<\/em> said that international funding constituted 57.2 percent of the society’s budget and amounted to 13 million rubels (some $4 million at the current exchange rate). Red Cross organizations provided 58 percent of that money, and the United Nations, 41 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies suspended the BRC as a member on December 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It explained that the BRC had failed to comply with its demand to dismiss the local secretary general, D\u017amitryj \u0160a\u016dco\u016d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The demand stemmed mainly from concerns about his vis\u00adits to the Russ\u00adian-occu\u00adpied Ukrainian cities of Luhan\u00adsk and Donet\u00adsk and his justification of the dis\u00adplace\u00adment of Ukrainian chil\u00addren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials in Minsk do not deny the transfers, but claim that they are organized for the benefit of the children and in agreement with their legal representatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights activists say the practice may constitute a war crime, expressing concern about children\u2019s indoctrination in Belarus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
