January 1, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Minsk is ready “to resume a full-fledged dialogue” with Slovakia, says Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s congratulatory message on the Day of the Establishment of the Slovak Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similar to the messages of the past two years, the Belarusian ruler addressed only “the people of Slovakia” without mentioning the Slovak authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have many areas of mutual interest: agriculture, industrial cooperation, trade, investment, research and education, culture and sports. Together we can achieve much more,” his press office quoted him as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities consider Slovakia an “unfriendly country.” As a member of the European Union, Slovakia supports Western sanctions against Minsk and accountability for the officials responsible for human rights abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus and Slovakia established diplomatic relations in 1993. In 2020, Belarusian Ambassador to Slovakia Ihar La\u0161\u010denia resigned after publicly condemning violence against participants of postelection protests in Belarus. The Belarusian government ruled to close the embassy in Bratislava by early December 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
