January 2, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The Polish Border Guard said eight foreigners tried to illegally cross into the European Union from Belarus over the past day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Border guards detained two Russian nationals with Polish and German residence permits for assisting illegal migrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania and Latvia did not register any border violations on January 1, Lithuania’s State Border Guard Service said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, the EU recorded at least 42,078 attempts by illegal migrants to enter its territory from Belarus, with 25,571 attempts via Poland, 13,863 via Latvia and 2,644 via Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pozirk<\/em>\u2018s analysis of daily stats indicated fluctuated tension at the Belarusian-EU border throughout 2023 with a significant decrease by the end of the year. Illegal border crossings fell to 726 attempts in December after peaking at 5,474 and 5,054 attempts in October and July, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In late August 2023, the interior ministers of Poland and the Baltic States warned that they would close the border with Belarus in case of a surge in illegal migration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
