January 3, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus between December 30 and January 2 as authorities keep up pressure on dissenters and jailed opposition activists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arrests and trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Homiel police arrested Volha Bra\u017eevi\u010d for donating $80 to the opposition initiatives in 2020 and following opposition content, a pro-government source said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In late December, police arrested participants in a hentai-themed party in Minsk, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported. Ten people were reportedly given jail terms from five to 15 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On November 28, a judge in Pastavy, Viciebsk region, fined teacher Natalla Sidlarevi\u010d 555 rubels ($175) and ordered the confiscation of her smartphone for following opposition Telegram channels, the Viciebsk branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former serviceman Pavie\u0142 Ku\u010dynski was given 19 years in prison on seven criminal charges, including high treason, forming a terrorist organization and damaging railway transport, Viasna said. No further details are known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other instances of persecution<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jailed Aleh Rubiec is accused of disobeying the prison administration, Viasna said. He is serving five and a half years in prison on charges widely seen as politically motivated and is currently held in a punishment cell at Prison No 8 in \u017dodzina, Minsk region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mika\u0142aj A\u016dtuchovi\u010d, serving a 25-year prison term, did not receive any parcels last year, Radyjo Svaboda<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In November, two officials from the Viciebsk justice department did not record any violations of inmates’ rights at Penal Colonies No 8 and No 12 in Or\u0161a, Viciebsk region, where 10 political prisoners are held, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Releases<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities released Stanis\u0142a\u016d Ma\u010da\u0142a\u016d, Mikalaj Maluta, Siarhiej Hackievi\u010d and Mikita D\u017amitryje\u016d convicted in politically-motivated cases, Viasna said. All four had served their sentences in full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of January 3, human rights defenders identified at least 1,452 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
