January 3, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> There are more than enough reasons for the recognition of the New Belarus passport, Valer Kavale\u016dski, in charge of foreign affairs at the opposition transition cabinet, has told Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement comes in response to skepticism from Petras Au\u0161trevi\u010dius, the European Parliament\u2019s permanent rapporteur on Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opposition “offers a solution” that could assert Belarusians as people who have agency to advocate for themselves, which is precisely \u201cthe basis of sovereignty,” Kavale\u016dski said, commenting on the Lithuanian MEP\u2019s argument that the New Belarus passport lacked essential components, such as sovereignty and territoriality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“As for territoriality, there are passports of the Order of Malta, which does not have any territory of its own. There are also passports issued by international organizations which are recognized by many countries, including Lithuania,” Kavale\u016dski said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician also cited historical precedent when Baltic states, Lithuania among them, issued their own passports during the Soviet occupation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though legal aspects are complicated, political will can prevail to set a precedent for other countries, Kavale\u016dski noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government of Belarus refuses to perform its basic state functions by turning them into a tool for reprisals targeting exiled Belarusians, he stressed in a reference to Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s Edict No 278. Signed in early September 2023, it prescribed the Belarusian embassies and consulates to stop providing passport and notary services to Belarusians abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian opposition, the European Union, the United States and human rights groups criticized the edict as a violation of the exiled Belarusians\u2019 rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opposition\u2019s new passport project would help thousands who have fled the country for safety reasons and cannot renew their Belarusian IDs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It may be also useful if the government applies the amended citizenship law, which allows it to deprive Belarusians of citizenship obtained by birth if they were convicted on extremism-related charges and fled persecution.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
