January 4, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has signed amendments to the law “On the President of the Republic of Belarus,” as well as to the laws on religious organizations and real estate management, his press office reported yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The amended law on the president specifies new requirements for candidates, raising the minimum age from 35 to 40 and the period of permanent residence in the country before elections from 10 to 20 years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also bans people with foreign citizenship, residence permits, or any other documents entitling them to benefits abroad from running for the office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the amendments, the president “heads the system of state service, is a delegate of the All-Belarusian People’s Assembly (UNS),” and can “make recommendations to the UNS on electing the chairs, deputies and judges of the Constitutional and Supreme Courts and the chair and members of the central election commission.” The president can also recommend sending soldiers abroad “to participate in collective security and activities to maintain international peace.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The amendments on religious organizations effectively prohibit them from being politically active beyond the official line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In October last year, the lower house of the Belarusian National Assembly adopted the first reading of a bill on religious organizations to ban religious groups from acting against the country’s sovereignty, constitutional order, and “civil harmony.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A religious organization can be dissolved if its operations do not conform to Belarus’ domestic and foreign policy, discredit the authorities, or promote extremism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real estate management amendments introduce harsher punishment for violations in the provision of housing and communal services and for failure to comply with local authorities’ “legitimate demands.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
