January 4, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> “We will do everything to ensure that border security is effective and tough when necessary, and at the same time that basic humanitarian human rights are not violated. Especially when it comes to the weakest,” Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said at a press conference following a government meeting on January 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was asked about “illegal pushbacks at the Polish-Belarusian border,” allegedly ordered by Maciej W\u0105sik when he was secretary of state at the Polish Ministry of the Interior and Administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There is a line between what is a necessary action of the Border Guard to prevent people from crossing our border . . . and actions that many would consider cruel or illegal,” Tusk said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that he plans to seek solutions that prioritize border protection and limit the “suffering of people.” At the same time, none of these solutions “should encourage or facilitate illegal entry into Poland.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tusk also announced his intention to visit the eastern border soon to meet with border guards, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far this year, Poland has prevented 23 attempts to cross the border illegally from Belarus. Last year there were about 25,600 such attempts. The number has increased by a factor of 1.6 since 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of daily stats indicated fluctuated but steady tension at the Belarusian-EU border throughout the year. Illegal border crossings peaked at 5,474 in October, exceeding the previous record high of 5,054 in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
