January 7, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> “I am convinced that by preserving the Orthodox traditions of mercy and moral purity, we will create the best future for our native Belarus together,” Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka said, greeting Eastern Orthodox faithful on Christmas, which they celebrate on January 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Christian compassion and care, simplicity and goodwill have long become the cultural heritage of the Belarusian people,” \u0141uka\u0161enka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We open our hearts to those who come in peace, and we are ready to share bread and shelter with those in need,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian strongman said he hopes that “the joy of these holidays will inspire new creative achievements this year.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eastern Orthodoxy is the dominant denomination in Belarus. The Russian Orthodox Church claims exclusive jurisdiction over the country’s Eastern Orthodox faithful. Its Belarusian exarchate estimates their number at four million. It has 1,733 parishes in 15 dioceses. Over 1,800 churches are open, and over 150 are under construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
