January 7, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The leader of the Free Belarus movement, Zianon Pa\u017aniak, has criticized the West’s sanctions policy against Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Experience has shown that sanctions are a total zilch. I said straight away that nothing will happen. You will not bring down Russia or the regime. You will drive \u0141uka\u0161enka under Russia,” the veteran conservative politician told the Bie\u0142aruski Krok<\/em> channel on YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He called the sanctions one of the causes of the “ongoing genocide in Belarus.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The sanctions work against the people. They block [Belarusian potash giant] Bie\u0142aru\u015bkalij from Lithuania . . . but they have no effect on the regime. The whole economy is working for Russia and its military. Various mafia schemes have been developed, and there is even trade with the West via third parties. It is an open secret,” Pa\u017aniak said. “Economy is stronger than politics, and these sanctions will do nothing.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also cited Cuba and North Korea as examples of sanctions’ failure to bring down dictators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States and its allies have imposed sanctions on Belarus because they disagree with how the government there treats its people and its neighbors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Major democratic opposition groups, such as the United Transitional Cabinet, the office of \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, and the National Anti-Crisis Management, support the restrictions and have repeatedly called on the international community to increase pressure on Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s regime.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
