January 8, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The campaign of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s government to cleanse Belarus’ political field, which was accompanied by the dissolution of parties, public and human rights organizations, and media, “has not achieved its goals,” said Vadzim Saran\u010duko\u016d, acting chairman of the Belarusian Popular Front, at a press conference in Vilnius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician is a member of the alliance of eight Belarusian political forces, which, in addition to the BPF, includes the United Civic Party, Belarusian Christian Democracy, Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Narodnaja Hramada), Belarusian Greens Party, Belarusian Social Democratic Hramada, Razam, and Movement for Freedom. Some of these organizations have never been registered, and others have been stripped of their registrations, including as a result of the re-registration campaign organized by the authorities in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Saran\u010duko\u016d, it is impossible to ban political parties, as one cannot simply ban ideologies, platforms, or networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, he admitted that “it has become very complicated” to work in Belarus. “We understand it perfectly well that speaking on behalf of an unregistered organization entails criminal prosecution.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U\u0142adzimir \u0160anca\u016d, acting chairman of the United Civi\u0441 Party, said the essence of the alliance is “coordination and consultation.” “We have been regularly communicating online for a long time. We have a chat and solve all issues together,” he said. “Sometimes we argue, but this is a completely normal working environment where people talk to each other and eventually come to terms.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dzianis Sado\u016dski, a Christian Democracy leader, noted that the political forces did coordinate their operations last year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Over the past 10-15 years of my opposition activity, I have not seen opposition parties have such coordination,” he said. “It is important to emphasize that the political parties were able to overcome obstacles and mutual conflicts in times of crisis and reprisals.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sado\u016dski mentioned the 8+100 inter-party forum among last year’s most notable international events. He said the meeting in Brussels was attended by “representatives of all major European Union factions with different political views, often in serious competition with each other.” Almost all of them spoke with one voice in support of Belarus, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian government has stopped playing democracy because “it does not want a repeat of 2020,” said Ja\u016dhien Vilski, acting chairman of Narodnaja Hramada. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The leaders of five opposition parties have been imprisoned in the country: Mika\u0142aj Statkievi\u010d, Ryhor Kastusio\u016d, Mika\u0142aj Kaz\u0142o\u016d, Pavie\u0142 Sieviaryniec, and Viktar Babaryka. Nevertheless, the role of Belarusian opposition parties abroad has increased. Western partners are returning to modes of operation that they understand and are familiar with, unlike courtyard activism and other initiatives.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, Belarusian party members “began to participate regularly in the sessions of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe” and were invited to other relevant events, Vilski said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
