January 11, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> “Dictators are using our lack of confidence to weaken us and to impose their will. We can prove that the true strength is in the democratic model and joint action,” \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, head of the United Transitional Cabinet (UTC), told members of the diplomatic corps at a briefing in Warsaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Franak Via\u010dorka, the politician’s chief advisor, told Pozirk<\/em> that diplomats from 36 countries attended the meeting at the Canadian embassy yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pointing to the European aspirations of the Belarusian people and the continuing threat to the sovereignty of Belarus from Russia, Cichano\u016dskaja urged the governments represented at the meeting to engage with the UTC as “the main executive body of the Belarusian democratic movement.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The democratic opposition leader urged diplomats to join the “group of friends of Belarus” in the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. The group consists of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and seven more European countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After highlighting the main results of her three-day visit to Warsaw, the politician went on to detail the UTC’s immediate plans. Firstly, she mentioned work on the release of political prisoners. She called on diplomats to demand access to inmates and draw the attention of UN bodies to their detention conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Without pressure and international attention, the regime will continue destroying our society and killing our people behind bars,” she stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secondly, the UTC will keep up its work on holding the regime of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka accountable for crimes through international legal mechanisms, strengthening its political isolation, harmonizing sanctions against Belarus and Russia, and stopping attempts to circumvent restrictions via third countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Cichano\u016dskaja, support for Belarusians in exile remains a priority for the UTC. She called for help implementing the New Belarus Passport project, including technical assistance, and asked governments to issue travel documents and long-term residence permits to Belarusians without red tape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja urged democratic governments to reject her country’s so-called local and parliamentary elections as a “farce.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She promoted a plan to hold elections for the Coordinating Council of various political forces “to show the alternative to \u0141uka\u0161enka’s regime and set an example of transparency and a true electoral process.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, she asked the governments “to assist our democratic institutions, civil society, media, and political prisoners.” This support “is not charity. It is an investment in Europe’s safe future.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diplomats from the Polish foreign office and the embassies of Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the United States attended the briefing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
