Almost 4,500 of them were convicted under the Administrative Offenses Code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Viasna said the real number is higher because there is &#8220;no complete data on reprisals.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, at least 2,000 people suffered &#8220;arrests and inhumane conditions in temporary detention centers, where the &#8216;politicals&#8217; are not given mattresses and hygiene products.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The majority of arrests, 1,535, were recorded in Minsk and the Minsk region. The Homiel and Hrodna regions followed with 1,345 and 1,023 arrestees, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the report, at least 4,466 politically-motivated trials under the Administrative Offenses Code took place in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Belarusian courts imposed at least 1,822 fines totaling 1.52 million rubels (almost $466,000). Judges also issued no less than 2,005 jail sentences. In total, Belarusians served at least 22,988 days in detention centers (about 64 years),&#8221; Viasna said. &#8220;In 22 cases, the courts assigned community service. They also dropped 38 cases for various reasons.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The human rights group pointed out that for three and a half years authorities have ill-treated those arrested under &#8220;political&#8221; articles, placing inmates in overcrowded cells and denying inadequate medical care.
