He may have been fired and dismissed as a member of the pro-government Republican Party of Labor and Justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities released Alaksandar Babi\u010d after he had served three and a half years in prison for allegedly resisting police officers during 2020 protests, the Brest branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On January 10, a judge in Mahilo\u016d convicted Alaksandar Illin, frontman of the Nizkiz rock band, of sharing opposition content, following the January 8 hearing in another minor offence case, Viasna reported. The exact sentence remains unknown. The singer was arrested together with two other band members on January 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Journalist and cameraman Alaksandar Zianko\u016d went on trial in Minsk on January 12 on extremism-related charges, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dani\u0142a Jarocki was tried in \u017d\u0142obin, Homiel region, on December 27 for participating in a 2020 protest rally, Viasna reported. He was given 18 months of restricted freedom in home confinement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Julija Sirotkina went on trial in \u017d\u0142obin on similar charges on January 11, according to Viasna. The ruling is unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Extremist&#8221; list update<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interior ministry added 22 more names to the list of &#8220;persons involved in extremist activities,&#8221; taking their total to 3,686, its website said. Of the 22, only Alaksiej Krasnahir, Juryj Minin and Anastasija Zia\u0144ko are serving sentences and were listed as political prisoners by human rights groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other instances of persecution<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities released Ta\u0107ciana Seviaryniec, mother of prominent jailed opposition politician Pavie\u0142 Seviaryniec, pending trial, her daughter Hanna said on Facebook. She was arrested on January 9 over social media posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities filed criminal charges against Aleh Stachajevi\u010d, an opposition activist from Mika\u0161evi\u010dy, Brest region, Viasna said. Human rights defenders say he may be persecuted on charges of slandering and insulting public officials. Stachajevi\u010d was released from custody on his own recognizance after 46 days in jail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pavie\u0142 Rezanovi\u010d, serving 19 years in prison on charges widely seen as politically-motivated, was transferred from a penal colony to Hrodna Prison No 1 in December, <em>Radyjo Svaboda<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of January 13, human rights defenders identified at least 1,414 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.
