October 17, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>“I wish Belarus to be among the priorities of the British Parliament, current and future UK government. I ask you to demand from your government the strong and decisive steps in confronting Putin’s and \u0141uka\u0161enka’s tyrannies,” opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja emphasized in her “Westminster Lecture” to MPs, diplomats and other dignitaries in London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja’s office quoted her as saying that “fighting for free Belarus is a part of the universal struggle for democracy.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Demand immediate withdrawal of Russian troops and weapons from Belarus,” she said. “Sanction Russia for undermining Belarus sovereignty.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She went on to say that Western sanctions against the Belarusian government were not fully effective because of loopholes. “The UK could set an example of how to fight circumvention of sanctions,” she suggested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also called on those present to “join the international coalition in support of independent and sovereign Belarus.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja said that while tightening sanctions against the regime, allies should increase support for democratic forces, civil society, independent media and human rights activists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Help us to restore justice. Demand the tribunal not only against Putin, but also \u0141uka\u0161enka. He also deserved his own arrest warrant. He has a long record of crimes,” she concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The democratic opposition leader also met with Wendy Morton MP, the former British minister for Europe. They discussed the need for a coordinated Western strategy on Belarus, primarily to secure the release of political prisoners. They also talked about supporting independent media and bringing Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka to justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja emphasized that Belarusians continue to fight and will not stop until there are truly free elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
