January 14, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Police will inspect each polling station in preparation for the upcoming parliamentary and local elections, Interior Minister Ivan Kubrako\u016d told Belarus 1<\/em> TV channel on Saturday evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities have already installed video surveillance systems around polling stations and plan to equip them with panic buttons, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 50 security forces employees will be in charge of monitoring Minsk-based polling stations, while special rapid response teams will assist police officers guarding public order, the official noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police have been preparing for the upcoming elections “since 2020 when the situation was indeed very tense,” Kubrako\u016d said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities have already developed the strategy and are drilling staff to react to any situation, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I want to tell everyone, including those who watch us from abroad: there will be no such thing as it was in 2020, when they [protesters] walked around and blocked the streets, knocked down benches and destroyed public facilities. There will be no excesses, but order will be ensured,” the official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intentions to monitor areas around polling stations may be linked to the 2020 presidential election when many voters stayed nearby awaiting the vote count results. In some cases, police assisted election commission members to flee through back doors to avoid confrontation with people who suspected them of vote-rigging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elections for the National Assembly\u2019s lower house and local councils are scheduled for February 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
