January 15, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> After talking to Mothers 328 last summer, Prosecutor General Andrej \u0160vied ordered a probe into a leak about the meeting, the human rights group Mayday Team reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, authorities have been harassing campaigners advocating for shorter prison sentences for drug-related offenses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Law enforcers call them, summon them for interrogation, and check their phones,” the Mayday Team said. They are trying to “identify administrators of social media and Telegram chats involving convicts’ relatives.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In December, police officers shut down a Viber chat room used by relatives of those convicted under Article 328. A search for the chat participants continues. Police also pressure administrators of other online communities of drug offenders’ families. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Article 328 of the Criminal Code bans illegal trafficking of narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances. Mothers 328 say that lengthy prison sentences imposed on drug users are out of proportion since they have nothing to do with distribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0160vied met with three Mothers 328 campaigners in Mazyr on June 20. The prosecutor general reportedly subscribed to their point of view that drug cases were often fabricated and sentences too harsh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the 2020 election race, Mothers 328 activist Ta\u0107ciana Kanie\u016dskaja was \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja’s campaign manager in Homiel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police arrested her in August 2020, and a judge sentenced her to six years in prison on rioting charges.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
