January 17, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The UN human rights committee has replied to Leanid Sudalenka’s complaint about systematic violations of his privacy, the Viasna Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2015, the Belarusian human rights activist told the committee that border guards had a “political list” and ran thorough checks at the frontier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judging by its number (No. 2929\/2017), UN experts set the complaint in motion in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The committee ruled that every person should have the right to know what personal data the government stores in its automatic databases and for what purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian government should compensate the victim for damages and relevant expenses and take measures to prevent similar violations in the future, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In ruling so, the human rights committee established a precedent relating to the secret modification of citizens’ data, Sudalenka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man fled Belarus in 2023 after serving a prison sentence for organizing and financing protests, a charge that human rights defenders denounced as politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
