January 18, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Union State of Belarus and Russia is “the flagship of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) in many areas,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said today at a press conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the Union State “sets the tone and direction” for the EEU. Despite this quality, other EEU partners, particularly Kazakhstan, do not strive to become its members, Lavrov said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“To be honest, I have not heard of Kazakhstan showing a particular interest in joining the Union State,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 24, 2023, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said the Union State’s presence in the EEU was problematic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The conceptual and ideological basis of this union is quite serious \u2013 it is the mutual recognition of the historical likeness of the Belarusian and Russian peoples, the recognition of their cultural, linguistic, and religious identity, and therefore the recognition that there is one people and one state,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Kazakh president, the Union State “is a unique precedent or phenomenon” in the world’s political history because it implements “the formula ‘two countries \u2013 one state’ with a common political, legal, military, economic, monetary, cultural, and humanitarian space, with a common union government and a common union parliament.” “I am sorry, but they even share nuclear weapons now,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The treaty on the establishment of the Union State was signed on December 8, 1999, and came into effect on January 26, 2000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russia began to push the integration forward in December 2018. Then-Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev made linked Moscow’s support for Minsk conditional on “deeper integration” between the two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
