January 20, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Polish Senate speaker Ma\u0142gorzata Kidawa-B\u0142o\u0144ska has called for the release of journalist Andrej Pa\u010dobut (Andrzej Poczobut), an activist of the outlawed Union of Poles in Belarus (ZPB) whose sentence rights groups say is politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to her Facebook page, Kidawa-B\u0142o\u0144ska made the call yesterday at a joint press conference with ZPB head An\u017ealika Borys (And\u017celika Borys) in Warsaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I call for the release of Andrej Pa\u010dobut, who is being held in very difficult conditions. I believe that he should be released, and I hope that this will happen soon,” the lawmaker said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kidawa-B\u0142o\u0144ska thanked Borys for ZPB’s work and highlighted the preservation of Polish language centers for children and youth as an important achievement. “This is the only form of Polish education available in Belarus today,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She assured Borys that the senators will permanently support ZPB and invited her to join an advisory council on Poles abroad. “I am very happy that we will be able to work together. This cooperation will lead to you visiting the Senate more often.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Borys said that about 300,000 Poles in Belarus would like to maintain contact with with Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are very interested in teaching the Polish language,” the minority leader said. “The situation is very difficult. That is why we are happy to be able to take care of the Polish language and memorial sites in spite of everything.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was Borys’ first trip abroad after the Belarusian authorities had dropped charges against her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ZPB head was arrested in March 2021 and then charged with inciting hatred. She was held in detention and later under house arrest. In April 2023, the Polish foreign ministry announced that she had been “exonerated from false charges.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pa\u010dobut, who was arrested in the same criminal case as Borys, was sentenced to eight years in prison. Warsaw retaliated by closing the Bobrowniki border crossing, seriously disrupting freight traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of 2023, it was revealed that the authorities forced a dozen Polish language schools to close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
