January 21, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The order of the Slovak culture ministry banning contacts and cultural cooperation with Belarus and Russia has been canceled by decision of the ministry’s head Martina \u0160imkovi\u010dov\u00e1, who has been in office for two and a half months, the local newspaper Pravda<\/em> reported yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because of the war in Ukraine, which was started by Moscow and supported by Minsk, the previous minister, Nat\u00e1lia Milanov\u00e1, on March 2, 2022, ordered the culture ministry, all subordinate organizations and their employees to “suspend any academic, cultural or other similar official cooperation with the Russian Federation or the Republic of Belarus until further notice.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pravda<\/em> obtained a new order, signed by the current minister, lifting the ban on January 15. \u0160imkovi\u010dov\u00e1 confirmed the authenticity of the document to Pravda<\/em> through her spokesman Pavol \u010corba. “There are dozens of military conflicts in the world, and, in our opinion, artists and culture should not pay for it,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Milanov\u00e1’s order banned any contact with the Belarusian and Russian authorities, as well as organizations financially linked to state or private entities of these countries. The ministry considered any communication other than the one-off notification that the cooperation had been suspended as gross misconduct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On October 25, 2023, the founder and leader of the center-left Direction \u2013 Social Democracy party, Robert Fico, who opposes military aid to Ukraine, was sworn in as prime minister of Slovakia.
