January 22, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> At least 33 political prisoners have been charged with malicious disobedience to prison authorities, Belarusian human rights defenders said. At least six of them faced this charge twice as of January 15, according to a report by the Viasna Human Rights Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viasna called the accusation “one of the biggest fears of political prisoners” because it allows officials to prolong their jail time indefinitely. “They often do this for far-fetched reasons to put additional pressure on the prisoner,” the center said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The charge carries a maximum of two years in prison. It contravenes Article 14 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which provides that no one shall be punished again for the same offense, activists say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government pressed disobedience charges against prominent political prisoners, such as Palina \u0160arenda-Panasiuk (twice), Siarhiej Cichano\u016dski and \u0179micier Da\u0161kievi\u010d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On January 9, the ByPol association of former law enforcers reported that authorities collected \u201cevidence\u201d to charge Mika\u0142aj Statkievi\u010d with malicious disobedience and add at least six months to his current sentence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
