January 23, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Andrej Astapovi\u010d, a former Belarusian investigator turned leader of the ByPol resistance group, said that the Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime might go as far as to try to assassinate him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I do not have any property [in Belarus], while reprisals against my family members took place before the special proceedings so that everyone had to be moved [abroad],” he told Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The comments came hours after the Minsk City Court started hearing a case against Astapovi\u010d and his associates without the defendants being present. The charges range from inciting hatred and insulting officials to high treason, forming an extremist group, committing terrorist acts and conspiracy to seize state power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exiled resistance group took security measures before the trial to protect its members and will continue doing so after the verdict is delivered, the former investigator noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities are doing “everything possible” to complicate the lives of people who oppose \u0141uka\u0161enka, and may eventually target everyone who voted against him in the 2020 presidential race, Astapovi\u010d stressed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
