Some of them were arrested. Human rights defenders said that at least 84 people were detained in the January 23 raid. Some arrests may be linked to INeedHelpBY, a group that helps reprisal victims buy food. On January 23, Belarusian authorities declared it an &#8220;extremist&#8221; group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police arrested Maryna Adamovi\u010d, wife of imprisoned social democrat Mika\u0142aj Statkievi\u010d, <em>Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported. The reasons remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Viciebsk police arrested opposition activist Barys Chamajda, 76, the Viasna Human Rights Center said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andrej Micin, a Yandex.Food delivery driver, is under arrest for participating in the 2020 postelection protests, <em>Mediazona<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Homiel police arrested Alaksiej Ramana\u016d, <em>Radyjo Svaboda<\/em> reported. Earlier, he had served a prison term on charges widely seen as politically motivated. The man was diagnosed with cancer. The reasons for this new arrest are unclear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hrodna region&#8217;s judges tried several people on charges of sharing opposition content, the <em>Sudy, Zaderzhaniya. Grodno i Oblast<\/em> Telegram channel reported. Ja\u016dhien Daniejka and Raman Rymko were among the defendants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A judge in Hrodna jailed a local man for following six opposition communities, including <em>nexta_tv<\/em> and <em>basta_bel<\/em>, the <em>Pravo Imeyut<\/em> initiative said. A Hrodna woman was ordered to pay a fine for following <em>Zerkalo.io<\/em>, a banned media outlet, on Instagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New criminal charges<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Prosecutor General\u2019s Office filed six criminal charges against Siarhiej Dubaviec, an exiled <em>RFE\/RL<\/em> Belarus Service journalist. Authorities accuse him of inciting hatred, setting up an extremist group, staging riots, \u201crehabilitating Nazism,\u201d denying the genocide of the Belarusian people and defaming Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belarusian investigators opened a special procedure case against Ivan Kra\u016dco\u016d, the Investigative Committee said. Authorities accuse former ally of banker-turned-politician Viktar Babaryka of inciting hatred, conspiracy to seize state power, extremism and fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alaksandar Malika\u016d went on trial in Lida, Hrodna region, on charges of insulting a public official, the <em>Pravo Imeyut<\/em> initiative said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Extremist&#8221; list update<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On January 16, the Committee for State Security (KGB) branded <em>Radyjo Racyja<\/em>, a Belarusian station based in Bia\u0142ystok, Poland, and its social media an extremist group, the interior ministry said. Other blacklisted content includes KOTOS: Miascovaje Samakirava\u0144ne, INeedHelpBy and BChB-Trielit, a chat on the Telegram messaging app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities also blacklisted the Telegram channel of Alexander Friedman, a political analyst and <em>Pozirk<\/em> contributor; the <em>zyve_belarus_vechna<\/em>, <em>belarus_com<\/em>, <em>stachkomgrodnopromstroj<\/em> Instagram pages; a YouTube page by the opposition resistance group BelPol; <em>belarus_youtube<\/em>, <em>svoboda_tv<\/em>, <em>news177<\/em> on TikTok as well as a film about Belarus by Russian blogger Ilya Varlamov.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other instances of persecution<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Minsk Regional Court rejected Alaksandar Mancevi\u010d\u2019s appeal against the four-year prison sentence, Viasna reported. In early November, <em>Rehijanalnaja Hazieta<\/em>\u2019s editor in chief was convicted of discrediting the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Law enforcers have been searching the home Maryna Kasinierava&#8217;s mother from 8 am to 6 pm on January 23, <em>Dissidentby <\/em>reported. Her daughter, a human rights defender, is based outside Belarus. The reasons are unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New political prisoners<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Human rights groups declared Ksienija Chadyrava, Vital Maksim\u010duk, Halina Krasnianskaja, Iryna Bandarenka, Nadzieja Karankievi\u010d, Alaksandar Bojka and journalist Alaksandar Zia\u0144ko\u016d political prisoners, Viasna reported. As of January 24, human rights defenders identified at least 1,415 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.
