January 25, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on January 24 as the number of arrests since the January 23 raid kept rising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arrests<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 143 people have been arrested in Belarus in a raid that swept across the country on January 23, Andrej Stry\u017eak, co-founder of the BySol Foundation, has said on Telegram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police arrested former journalist Siarhiej Hardzijevi\u010d in Drahi\u010dyn, Brest region, the Belarusian Association of Journalists reported. He may face charges of sharing opposition content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aksana Ju\u010dkovi\u010d, a former journalist with catholic.by, the official website of the Roman Catholic Church in Belarus, is also under arrest, Chry\u015bcijanskaja Vizija group reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alena Vinakurava, a former activist of the strike committee at the Palimir plant in Navapo\u0142ack, Viciebsk region, arrested during the January 23 raid, was placed in a temporary detention center in Viciebsk, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Valancina Mironava, mother of exiled activist Illa Mirona\u016d, may be under arrest as there has been no news from her since January 23, \u0160todzie\u0144<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk police arrested Siarhiej Charytanovi\u010d for donations to opposition initiatives and allegedly writing 2,000 “insulting comments” online, Mediazona <\/em>reported. In a police video, he admitted to participating in 2020 postelection protests. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Minsk judge jailed Maryna Adamovi\u010d, the wife of prominent opposition politician Mika\u0142ai Statkievi\u010d, for 15 days on charges of petty hooliganism, the Vesna Nabludayet<\/em> Telegram channel said. Her husband is serving a lengthy prison term in a politically-motivated case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dzianis Kra\u015bko from Brest was given three years in prison for allegedly inciting hatred, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On January 8, a judge in Minsk sentenced Alaksiej Dmucho\u016dski and Vital Palako\u016d to 18 months and three years of restricted freedom, respectively, Viasna said. Both were accused of gross violations of public order and are to serve sentences in home confinement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In mid-December, businessman Siarhiej Hu\u010dok was given two and a half years of restricted freedom in home confinement on similar charges, according to Viasna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other instances of persecution<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Homiel police searched the home of Valeryj Krachma\u0142a\u016d, who left Belarus in 2021 after facing reprisals, Flagshtok<\/em> reported. His mother was briefly detained. The incident may be linked to the ongoing persecution of INeedHelpBY aid recipients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus violated the rights of the lawyer Vital Brahiniec, jailed on charges widely seen as politically motivated, Viasna reported, citing the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Political prisoners<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights defenders declared nine people as former political prisoners, Viasna said. They did not have the status while serving their sentences. Hanna Kruk, Piotr Patapovi\u010d, Alena Patapovi\u010d, U\u0142adzis\u0142a\u016d Fiedarovi\u010d and Vadzim \u010cara\u016dko persecuted on protest-related charges were listed as new political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of January 25, human rights defenders identified at least 1,419 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
