January 26, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Volha \u010cuprys, deputy head of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s administration, has thanked lawyers for “agitating for active participation in an election campaign,” according to the press office of the Ministry of Justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Everyone must understand that electoral participation is not only their political right. It is an important social and political function. The development of our state depends on every citizen’s active position,” \u010cuprys told a meeting of the Belarusian Republican Bar Association in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Citing to the country’s Legal Policy Concept, she said: “The role of a lawyer should be somewhat broader than just defending the rights and freedoms of a particular citizen.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bar should, among other things, protect “the foundations of the constitutional order and society in general.” “The Bar is an integral part of the legal system. The standards for lawyers are very high. They include moral and personal qualities, not only the level of professionalism. Belarusian lawyers are patriotic and public-spirited,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Systematic pressure on lawyers in Belarus started after the 2020 presidential election. Authorities took control of the bar, while dozens of lawyers lost their licenses for political reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government required lawyers to work in legal consultancy offices approved by the justice ministry. Some lawyers faced criminal charges or fled the country while others were sentenced to prison terms in politically-motivated cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
