January 27, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on January 26 as authorities continued harassing dissenters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arrests<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 165 people have been persecuted as a part of the January 23 raid across Belarus, the Viasna Human Rights Center said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk police arrested a vocational school instructor for allegedly threatening violence against a police official in a social media post, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interior ministry’s organized crime unit arrested a man for allegedly calling for “the radicalization of protests” and for “links with an extremist group,” a pro-government Telegram channel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ludmi\u0142a Vo\u016dk was arrested on January 23 in Po\u0142ack, Viciebsk region, Viasna’s Viciebsk branch said. Authorities did not disclose any further details of the case. Her daughter Hanna Tukava held an anti-war protest on September 1, 2022 at a Navapo\u0142ack school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ludmi\u0142a Ana\u0161kievi\u010d was jailed for 15 days in Po\u0142ack for sharing opposition content. The 65-year-old was arrested during the January 23 raid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On January 11, a judge in Navapo\u0142ack fined Volha Sa\u010dy\u016dka 600 rubels (about $190) for sharing links to opposition groups on her Odnoklassniki page, the Viciebsk branch of Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New criminal charges<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A former political prisoner, presumably Hanna Vi\u0161niak, was charged with facilitating extremism in connection with her interview to a blacklisted opposition media outlet, Viasna reported. The woman left Belarus after serving two and half years in prison over protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other instances of persecution<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police searched the home of Volha Kasian\u010duk’s parents and seized some of the property, she said on Facebook. The woman is currently based abroad and is active at the Belarusian Council for Culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hrodna prosecutors charged a young man with “desecrating the Eternal Flame,” Viasna reported. The prosecutor announced the charge in the presence of law students, former prisoners and juvenile offenders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of January 27, human rights defenders identified at least 1,418 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
