He linked the trend to the &#8220;geopolitical situation in the region&#8221; and the closure of a border checkpoint between Poland and Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lithuanian travel flows to Belarus fell due to queues and security threats yet remain steady, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ensuring the best possible control over foreigners entering Lithuania, primarily Russian and Belarusian nationals, would be easier if traveler flows were less intense, Liubajevas noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In mid-August 2023, Lithuania closed the \u0160umskas and Tvere\u010dius checkpoints at the border with Belarus, citing the lack of equipment for scanning truck trailers and security concerns. Vilnius was evaluating the possible closure of more border crossings but abandoned this idea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The complete closure of the border would require coordination with neighboring EU countries, and there is a &#8220;very logical plan&#8221; to do that, Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida \u0160imonyt\u0117 said, referring to Belarus as a &#8220;source of instability.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later that month, the interior ministers of Poland and the Baltic States warned that they would close the border with Belarus in case of a surge in illegal migration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>January 28, Pozirk.
