January 28, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has issued a call against the possible deportation of BI 2 rock band musicians from Thailand to Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“BI-2 openly supported our Belarusian protests in 2020 and stood against [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s aggression in Ukraine. In Russia, they may be persecuted and repressed. We must not let this happen,” the Belarusian opposition leader said on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On January 24, seven BI 2 musicians were arrested in Thailand after a concert for allegedly not having necessary work permits. They may be deported despite having paid the fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five of the seven musicians are Russian nationals. Belarus-born Alexander Uman and Yegor Bortnik hold citizenships of Israel and Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uman and Bortnik founded BI 2 in 1988 in Babrujsk, Belarus. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the band moved to Israel and then to Australia. Musicians often performed in Russia and other former Soviet countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the start of Russia’s full-scale war on Ukraine in February 2022, the band took an anti-war stance and was banished from Russia. In 2020, BI 2 supported the postelection protests in Belarus and spoke out against police violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
