January 30, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusian pro-democracy forces consider their cooperation with the Council of Europe to be strategic, \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja told the CoE Committee of Ministers in Strasbourg. “It is probably the most important foreign cooperation that we have,” she said, as quoted by her office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The reason for this assessment is simple \u2013 we see no other future for Belarus than a European future,” the opposition leader said. “The Council of Europe is a community of values, and we, Belarusians, want to be part of this community.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja told the ministers about recent arrests of opposition supporters and the condition of political prisoners. She thanked the CoE for formalizing its relations with the Belarusian opposition. She also suggested drafting a roadmap for Belarus to promptly join the CoE when it returns on the path to democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials from 45 states took part in the Committee of Ministers meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CoE Secretary General Marija Pej\u010dinovi\u0107 Buri\u0107 spoke about work done by the contact group for Belarus over the past year. Buri\u0107 and Cichano\u016dskaja presented a two-year action plan for the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja pointed to several priorities: training Belarusian lawyers, investing in young activists and promoting European values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The debate involved members of more than 20 delegations. They discussed ways to free Belarusian political prisoners, among other issues, an advisor to Cichano\u016dskaja told Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CoE contact group for Belarus was established in November 2022. It includes Belarusian opposition politicians and civil society activists. In October, the CoE provided them with an office in Strasbourg.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
