February 6, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Ukrainians should distinguish between the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime and its interests and the interests of the Belarusian people, said Ihor Kyzym, Kyiv’s newly appointed special envoy for Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He told Zakhidnyi Front<\/em> that his first priority in the new position is to establish permanent working ties with Belarusian pro-democracy forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We should hear what the Belarusian democratic forces expect from the Ukrainian government and convey our vision of these relations,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He went on to say that his participation in a conference organized by the Kastu\u015b Kalino\u016dski Regiment in the Ukrainian capital in November was his “first serious experience of talking to Belarusians in this context.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Belarus have been limited to the minimum. “One of my main tasks as ambassador-at-large is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of these relations from the foreign ministry’s standpoint and make relevant proposals for their further development,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka is the past of the Belarusian-Ukrainian ties, he added, and Kyiv should consider developing relations without him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that Belarusians are very different from “zombified” Russians and that some of them are fighting for Ukraine. “All this should matter when we try to objectively define our attitude towards Belarusians,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Belarusians should understand that the main thing for Ukrainians is liberty and the desire for freedom and democracy. And Ukrainians should know about Belarusians that they are quite patient, but when their patience runs out they become like Ukrainians,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
