{"id":65488,"date":"2024-02-07T11:49:58","date_gmt":"2024-02-07T08:49:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/?post_type=articles&#038;p=65488"},"modified":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","slug":"update-on-arrests-trials-politically-motivated-persecution-126","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/65488\/","title":{"rendered":"Update on arrests, trials, politically-motivated persecution"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>February 7, <em>Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on February 6, including trials of dissenters and additions to the political prisoners\u2019 list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arrests<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police arrested at least seven people in the Homiel region for sharing opposition content, the Homiel branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alaksandar \u0160par\u0142o and Anastasija Ani\u015bka were arrested for participating in 2020 postelection protests, a pro-government Telegram channel said. \u0160par\u0142o reportedly had talked to an <em>Onliner<\/em> journalist during a rally. Authorities may release Ani\u015bka after 10 days under arrest pending trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On January 22, a contract soldier from Lida, Hrodna region, was fined 1,600 rubels (about $500) and had his smartphone confiscated for having a modified coat of arms of Nazi Germany on his TikTok profile picture and sharing posts from <em>Solidarnost.gazetaby<\/em>, <em>hrodna.life<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Viktoryja Kutuzava, arrested on February 3 for sharing opposition content, was jailed for 13 days, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On January 30, police arrested A\u0142a \u010cujko and \u015aviat\u0142ana Kozie\u0142, a head teacher and a secretary, respectively, at School No 1 in Biaroza\u016dka, Hrodna region, the <em>Zaderzhaniya, Sudy v Lide<\/em> Telegram channel said. A judge fined them 1,200 rubels (about $375) each for online reactions and following opposition content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On December 27, a judge in Lida sentenced Hiennad\u017a \u017dukiel, 63, to one year in prison for allegedly insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Homiel Regional Court resumed the hearing in a case against D\u017amitryj Papko\u016d, Ihar \u010carnavusa\u016d and U\u0142adzimir Kamiena\u016d, who face extremism-related charges, the Homiel branch of Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ivan Suchamiera\u016d will go on trial in Homiel on February 15 on 10 criminal charges, ranging from abusing state symbols and calling for sanctions to high treason and financing extremism, <em>\u0160todzie\u0144<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other instances of persecution<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Valancina Mironava, the mother of exiled activist Illa Mirona\u016d, left Belarus fearing politically-motivated persecution, <em>Flagshtok<\/em> reported. Last time, police arrested her during the January 23 raid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belarus and Russia are working towards merging their &#8220;lists of extremists and extremist content,&#8221; state-run media reported, quoting Belarusian Ambassador to Russia D\u017amitryj Krutoj.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New political prisoners<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belarusian human rights community listed 12 more people as political prisoners: Artur Ho\u0142ubie\u016d, Arciom Antona\u016d, Aleh Zykun, Maksim Kara\u0144kou, Andrej \u0141om\u0161a, Via\u010das\u0142a\u016d Panasiuk, Alaksandar Skvarco\u016d, Michai\u0142 \u010cumako\u016d, Rus\u0142an \u0160uka\u0142a, Filip Zaleski, Veranika Kazak and Hienad\u017a \u017dukiel, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of February 7, human rights defenders identified at least 1,424 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.
