February 10, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on February 9 as authorities kept punishing online activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judge in Navapo\u0142ack, Viciebsk region, sentenced Alaksiej Kisialo\u016d to two jail terms of 13 and 15 days for sharing opposition content on Instagram and posting the tut.by<\/em> logo on VKontakte, the Viciebsk branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On January 26, a judge in Miory, Viciebsk region, fined Ta\u0107ciana Hryhorjeva 800 rubels (about $250) for opposition posts on Odnoklassniki, Vaisna’s Viciebsk branch reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the same day, two women from Lida, Hrodna region, were fined 1,000 rubels ($310) each for receiving food aid through the INeedHelpBY initiative, Mediazona.Belarus<\/em> reported. Both women were also ordered to compensate to the authorities the monetary equivalent of received aid totaling 5,241 rubels ($1,635) and 18,143 rubels ($5,625), respectively. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

New criminal charges<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities accused Iryna Takar\u010duk, mother of blogger and designer Volha Takar\u010duk, of facilitating extremism, Viasna reported. The BySol Solidarity Fund helped her daughter leave Belarus as she feared politically-motivated persecution, its head Andrej Stry\u017eak said on Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On January 18, a judge in Minsk sentenced pensioner Vasil Rubco\u016d to two and a half years of restricted freedom in home confinement for participating in a 2020 postelection rally, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artist Hanna Kruk was given three years of restricted freedom in home confinement on similar charges, according to Viasna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Extremist” list update<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interior ministry added 12 more people to the list of “persons involved in extremist activities,” taking the total of entries to 3,765, its website said. Five of them are serving sentences on charges widely seen as politically motivated, while seven others are free, but their criminal records have not been expunged. Charges against them ranged from insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and officials to participating in protests and abusing state symbols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other instances of persecution<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prominent opposition politician Mika\u0142aj Statkievi\u010d has been held incommunicado in a Belarusian prison for a year, Viasna said. His wife Maryna Adamovi\u010d has not heard anything from him since receiving a letter last February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Babrujsk, Mahilo\u016d region, police officers conducted smartphone checks of at least 15 people who were arrested in 2020 or signed up to observe the presidential electoral campaign, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of February 10, human rights defenders identified at least 1,419 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
