February 11, Pozirk<\/em><\/strong>. Authorities have opened 19 criminal cases on charges of phone fraud since the start of 2024, the interior ministry’s press office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scammers usually persuaded their interlocutors to hand over large sums of money in exchange for absolving their family members from responsibility for the alleged traffic accidents, it said, noting that similar crimes were registered all over Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The damage reportedly exceeded 200,000 rubels (about $62,000). Scammers involved minors in the fraud, and used cab drivers to deliver parcels with cash, the interior ministry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, police registered more than 85,000 crimes with every seventh linked to fraud, Andrej Kavalo\u016d who heads the interior ministry’s cybercrime unit told journalists on February 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the same day, a group of 48 people was arrested in Minsk for the alleged theft of funds from bank accounts disguised as online and cryptocurrency trading. The group reportedly operated call centers in Minsk, Moscow and other cities abroad.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
