February 12, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The national ice hockey teams of Ukraine and Belarus may face off against each other in the qualification tournament for the 2026 Olympics, belarushockey.com<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukraine’s team reached the final round and was placed in a group together with Belarus, Kazakhstan and Slovakia. The qualification tournament is scheduled to take place in Slovakia’s Bratislava from August 29 to September 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian team’s participation is conditional on the decision of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), which suspended Belarus and Russia from participation in its tournaments. The IIHF is expected to make an announcement this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In late October, the IIHF listed Belarusian and Russian national teams among potential participants of the 2026 Olympics, with the deadline for a final decision set for March 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IIHF banned both teams from the 2022 and 2023 World Championships after Russia launched a full-scale war on Ukraine in February 2022 with the support of Belarus’ authorities. In 2021, Belarusians showed the second-worst performance at the world championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next Winter Olympics will be held in February 2026 in Italy’s Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
