February 15, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Minsk City Court has sentenced founders, representatives, and ex-members of the ByPol union of former law enforcers to long prison terms in absentia<\/em>, the Prosecutor General\u2019s Office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The court sentenced Alaksandar Azara\u016d to 25 years, Ma\u0107viej Kuprej\u010dyk, U\u0142adzimir \u017dyhar, Ihar \u0141oban, and Aleh Taler\u010dyk to 12 years; and Andrej Astapovi\u010d to 11 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also fined Azara\u016d 400,000 rubels (some $122,000 at the current exchange rate); Kuprej\u010dyk 220,000 rubels; \u017dyhar, \u0141oban, and Astapovi\u010d 200,000 rubels; and Taler\u010dyk 40,000 rubels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The defendants in the ByPol case were found guilty of trying to overthrow the government and inciting hatred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, Azara\u016d was found guilty of high treason, terrorism, and destruction of railway equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the accused were convicted of other \u201cextremist crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The court was hearing the ByPol case, opened under the special procedure that allows the government to prosecute its exiled opponents, since January 22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to investigators, the defendants and other ByPol members agitated the masses and exerted pressure on the government and civil servants by publishing their personal data on the Internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also accused ByPol of a \u201cspecial operation\u201d called Victory Plan and of involvement in the \u201cextremist\u201d groups, such as the opposition United Transitional Cabinet and Paspalitaje Ru\u0161e\u0144nie, a network of patriotic self-defense training camps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
