February 15, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The UN Human Rights Committee has demanded that the Belarusian authorities take \u201curgent protection measures\u201d for Siarhiej Cichano\u016dski, Maksim Znak and Viktar Babaryka, who are being held incommunicado, the Office of \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The committee also demanded that they \u201censure the physical and moral well-being\u201d of Cichano\u016dski and allow him access to qualified medical care, lawyers and family while the HRC considers his case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIncommunicado detention \u2013 with a risk of enforced disappearance \u2013 is indicative of a strategy to punish political opponents and hide evidence of their ill-treatment and torture by law enforcement and prison authorities,\u201d the committee said in a statement, as quoted by Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her office called on its international partners to \u201cpublicly highlight the problem of incommunicado detention of Siarhiej Cichano\u016dski, Maksim Znak and Viktar Babaryka, and other political prisoners.\u201d \u201cWe are demanding access to their lawyers and qualified medical personnel, as well as to stop blocking their correspondence with close relatives,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lawyer last saw presidential hopeful Viktar Babaryka on February 6, 2023. The authorities blocked his correspondence and telephone calls. He has been behind bars since June 18, 2020. The former banker is serving a 14-year prison sentence on charges that are believed to be politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On February 9, relatives last received a letter from Maksim Znak, the counsel for Babaryka\u2019s campaign. A judge sentenced him to 10 years in prison. He has been deprived of the right to correspondence and meetings with his lawyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last piece of news from popular video blogger Siarhiej Cichano\u016dski, the husband of the Belarusian opposition leader, was received on March 9, 2023. His lawyers and family cannot reach him. Originally, the man was sentenced to 18 years in prison. Later, a judge added 1.5 years to his sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
