February 16, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has expressed hopes for improving relations with the Lithuanian people, blaming Lithuanian politicians for the deterioration of relations with Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Belarus has always been interested in a peaceful and prosperous Lithuania,” his press office reported, citing the congratulatory message on the Restoration of the State Day in Lithuania. The Belarusian ruler stressed that, in his opinion, deteriorated bilateral relations did not reflect the aspirations of ordinary Lithuanians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few years ago, no one could imagine that Lithuanian politicians could ban Belarusians from visiting Lithuania and build fences on the common border, he said, noting that Belarus responded by extending the visa waiver for Lithuanians and offered to expand trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Relations between Belarus and Lithuania deteriorated after the contested 2020 presidential election, marred by vote-rigging rigging and a crackdown on mass protests. Belarusian authorities have been persecuting their opponents for over three years, while Lithuania became one of the centers of exiled Belarusian opposition, with the office of its leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja based in Vilnius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk aggravated its relations with Vilnius by facilitating the illegal migration crisis on the European Union borders, supporting Russia’s war on Ukraine, deploying Russian tactical nuclear weapons and hosting Wagner Group mercenaries.
