February 19, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Six more people have been designated as political prisoners in Belarus, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. This brings the total number to 1,423.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The political prisoner status was granted to Nizkiz band members Alaksandar Ilin, Siarhiej Kul\u0161a and D\u017amitryj Chala\u016dkin, as well as Uljana Jakovi\u010d, Aksana Ju\u010dkavi\u010d and Arciom Zakr\u017ee\u016dski.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All six are prosecuted under Article 342 Part 1 of the Criminal Code carrying punishment for the organization and preparation of actions grossly violating public order or active participation in such actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights groups called on the Belarusian authorities to immediately release all political prisoners and citizens detained for peaceful assembly in the postelection period and to stop political repression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement to this effect was signed by Viasna, the Belarusian Helsinki Committee, Belarusian PEN, the Office for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Belarusian Association of Journalists, Pravavaja Inicyjatyva, Lawtrend, and Human Constanta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
