February 21, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Human rights defenders have demanded that prosecutors and investigators open a probe into the death of imprisoned activist Ihar Lednik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Currently, the official cause of death and other circumstances are not known with certainty. The prison system has once again demonstrated a complete lack of transparency and separation from society, even in matters of life and death,” they said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Viasna Human Rights Center and other Belarusian human rights groups urged the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Investigative Committee to conduct an objective and comprehensive investigation, determine the causes and inform the public of the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The human rights organizations also demanded information on the probes into other political prisoner deaths, checks on all violations of the right to healthcare in prisons and accountability for abusers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The signatories called on judges to consider defendants’ health and not to impose unnecessary prison sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
