February 22, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The criminal case<\/a> against Mahilo\u016d-based journalist Ale\u015b Sabale\u016dski was opened because he cooperated with 6tv.by<\/em>, according to a video posted to a pro-government Telegram channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the video, Sabale\u016dski said he had cooperated with the media outlet since 2017 as a reporter and organizer of livestreams from “unauthorized mass events.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sabale\u016dski was arrested on December 12 at work and placed in a pre-trial detention center. A Mahilo\u016d court sentenced him to 10 days in jail the next day for an unknown misdemeanor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After serving his sentence, Sabale\u016dski remained in custody, accused of distributing “extremist” content, a minor offense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, human rights activists reported that he was transferred to a remand prison in Mahilo\u016d and faced criminal charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On January 19, Sabale\u016dski was designated as a political prisoner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On February 20, media reported that investigators also opened an extremism case against Ja\u016dhien H\u0142u\u0161ko\u016d, a freelance cameraman from Mahilo\u016d who was detained in early January for cooperating with 6tv.by<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a video filmed by law enforcers, H\u0142u\u0161ko\u016d said he had cooperated with the outlet since 2017. The case was opened under Article 361-1 of the Criminal Code, which bans membership in extremist groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Committee for State Security (KGB) labeled the regional media organization 6tv.by<\/em> as an “extremist group” on November 29, 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
