{"id":6985,"date":"2023-10-20T20:47:31","date_gmt":"2023-10-20T17:47:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/?post_type=articles&#038;p=6985"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:40:57","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:40:57","slug":"eu-on-taratuta-sentence-death-penalty-does-not-deter-crime","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/6985\/","title":{"rendered":"EU on Taratuta sentence: death penalty does not deter crime"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>October 20, <em>Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Capital punishment strips people of their human dignity, does not deter crime, and makes miscarriages of justice irrevocable, the European Union said in a statement on the death sentence handed to Belarusian Alaksandar Taratuta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EU expressed its &#8220;sincere sympathy to the loved ones of the victim and all those affected by his deplorable and brutal crime.&#8221; At the same time, it reiterated its &#8220;unequivocal opposition to the death penalty in all cases and in all circumstances.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It called on Belarus, the only country in Europe that still uses the death penalty, to impose a moratorium on capital punishment as a &#8220;first step towards its full abolition, in line with the worldwide trend.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yesterday, the Minsk Regional Court sentenced Taratuta to death for killing his three-year-old son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another defendant in the case, Anastasija Taratu\u00adta, the boy\u2019s moth\u00ader, was giv\u00aden 25 years in prison. The parents were found guilty on charges of torturing and murdering the minor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In January, the parents hit their son at least 14 consecutive times and called an ambulance when he died, investigators said. The child was reportedly regu\u00adlar\u00adly beat\u00aden for mis\u00adbe\u00adhav\u00adior, was exhaust\u00aded and weighed only sev\u00aden kilo\u00adgrams at the time of death.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>October 20, Pozirk.
