February 28, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has congratulated Tam\u00e1s Sulyok on his election as the president of Hungary, the Belarusian ruler’s office reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Minsk is interested in further developing its constructive dialogue with Budapest on the basis of equality, mutual respect and substantial bilateral relations in trade, economy, energy, science, technology, sports, culture and other fields,” \u0141uka\u0161enka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He hoped that Belarusian-Hungarian cooperation will keep getting stronger with Sulyok’s support. \u0141uka\u0161enka wished him good health and success at the top post, and also wished the “friendly people” of Hungary “prosperity and wellbeing”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hungary’s parliament elected Tam\u00e1s Sulyok, who previously served as the head of the country’s Constitutional Court, on February 26. His candidacy was proposed by Fidesz\u2013KDNP Party Alliance, which holds 135 of the 199 seats in the parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On February 10, Sulyok’s predecessor Katalin Nov\u00e1k resigned amid controversy over her decision to pardon a man convicted in a child abuse case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hungary is the only European Union country to maintain public contacts with officials in Minsk. As an EU member, it had to join sanctions on the \u0141uka\u0161enka government, but Hungarian authorities opposed their imposition on several occasions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In October 2023, Hungarian Foreign Minister P\u00e9ter Szijj\u00e1rt\u00f3 participated in a security conference in Minsk. He also visited Belarus in February last year. In the same month, the two countries’ foreign ministries signed a cooperation program for 2023, which envisaged measures to stimulate economic cooperation, and educational and cultural exchanges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In September last year, \u0141uka\u0161enka accepted the credentials of Hungarian Ambassador Zita Bencsik. Thus, Hungary remains the only EU country whose ambassador presented credentials to \u0141uka\u0161enka after the 2020 protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
