March 2, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The central election commission has formally approved the results of last week’s election for the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twenty (18.2 percent) of the 110 MPs served in the previous parliament, Ihar Karpienka, the top election official, said at the commission’s meeting yesterday. Twenty-seven (24.5 percent) were members of local councils before; 37 women account for 33.6 percent of all seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Karpienka, 40 percent of MPs have civil service background; 23.6 percent with background in science, education, healthcare, culture and sports; 15.5 percent, in industry, transportation and construction; 7.3 percent come from the law enforcement, security and defense agencies; 2.7 percent with background in trade, consumer services and housing management; and 10.9 percent, in other fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The February 20-25 elections for the lower house and local councils were marred by repression and the lack of opposition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States and many European countries and institutions have condemned the elections as a sham. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Independent Belarusian monitors based abroad reported irregularities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
