March 4, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The European Union (EU) has not allowed at least 92 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus over the past day, following 68 attempts on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lithuanian State Border Guard Service did not record illegal border crossing attempts this weekend but said their Latvian couterparts thwarted 15 attempts on March 2 and 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Polish Border Guard said 77 foreigners tried to illegally cross the Belarusian-Polish border yesterday, following 53 attempts a day earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between January 1 and March 3, illegal migrant flows on the Belarus-EU border fell from 4,215 attempts in 2023 to 753 since the start of 2024. This year, the EU thwarted 96 attempts in January, 458 in February and 199 in the three days of March alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of daily stats indicated fluctuated tension at the Belarusian-EU border throughout 2023 with a significant decrease by the end of the year and in January 2024. Starting from February, illegal border crossings have been on the rise again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2023, the interior ministers of Poland and the Baltic States warned that they would close the border with Belarus in case of a surge in illegal migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
