March 4, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Threats of Western sanctions affect ties between Belarus and Kazakhstan, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has told Kazakh Ambassador Yerlan Baizhanov.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We should seek areas for our cooperation without creating problems for Kazakhstan,” his press office quoted him as saying. “You should know that we are ready to cooperate with you across the board in the interests of your state.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two reportedly discussed details of the upcoming visit by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to Belarus later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian manufacturers and cargo carriers use Kazakhstan to evade Western sanctions, investigative journalists have found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the past two years, Lithuanian authorities have filed more than 250 criminal cases in connection with sanction evasion by Russia and Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traders are suspected of circumventing sanctions by changing customs codes and the country of origin of their exports, often indicating Kazakhstan or Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politically-motivated persecution and Western sanctions have forced some IT companies to relocate to Kazakhstan from Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In two years, more than 1,000 IT workers have moved to Kazakhstan, a Kazakh diplomat said earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kazakhstan is one of the major trade and economic partners of Belarus. In seven months of 2023, trade amounted to $683 million, $1.24 billion in 2022, and more than $1 billion in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both countries are members of the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organization and the Eurasian Economic Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
