March 5, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has said that he has not yet made a “final decision” to run in the presidential election in 2025, playing down his recent promise to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Tell them [the opposition] that I will run,” the Belarusian strongman told journalists on February 25. But today he explained that it was simply a call for calm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It does not mean that I said that I will or will not,” he told Belarusian Women’s Union activists in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Everything will depend on how we approach these elections,” he said. “What if a person we can trust comes out? . . . Anything can happen, so we have created the All-Belarusian People’s Assembly. Not for \u0141uka\u0161enka. I am already fed up with this hardest work. You think about it when you go to sleep, when you are awake and when you wake up in the morning.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka has ruled Belarus for almost three decades. He turns 70 this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meeting with arrested opposition leaders in October 2020, he pledged not to run for president again, according to former political prisoner Juryj Vaskrasienski who has sided with the government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
