March 6, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusian human rights groups have designated four people as political prisoners in a joint statement released by the Viasna center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are: Raman Zabie\u0142a, Illa Pa\u0142onski, Maksim Nazar\u010duk and Darja Mandzik. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All were arrested on February 14, and are being held at Detention Center No. 1 in Minsk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the rights groups, they have been charged with a public disorder criminal offences in connection with postelection protests. If convicted, they could face up to four years in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The groups noted that freedom of peaceful assembly is guaranteed by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and that democracies may only restrict it in the interest of national and public security or similar circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the spontaneous protests were caused by public distrust for the presidential election results, which were not recognized by the international community, the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The signatories called for the immediate release of Zabie\u0142a, Pa\u0142onski, Nazar\u010duk, Mandzik, all other political prisoners, and citizens arrested for exercising their freedom of peaceful assembly in the post-election period. They again urged the government to stop reprisals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement was signed by Viasna, Pravavaja Inicyjatyva, the Office for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Belarusian Association of Journalists, the Belarusian Helsinki Committee, the Barys Zvozska\u016d Human Rights House, Human Constanta, and Lawtrend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Viasna, 1,417 people currently have the political prisoner status. However, the real number is said to be much higher.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
