March 6, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The European Union (EU) has not allowed at least 65 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus over the past day after thwarting 81 attempts on March 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lithuanian State Border Guard Service has not registered border violations for four consecutive days. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The peak of illegal border crossings between Lithuania and Belarus was recorded between February 15 and 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of illegal border crossings between Belarus and Latvia spiked to 28 on March 5, a record high for 2024, following 13 attempts recorded on March 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Polish Border Guard said 37 and 68 foreigners tried to illegally enter from Belarus on March 5 and 4, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, the EU thwarted at least 899 illegal border crossings on its shared border with Belarus, with 699 attempts via Poland, 167 via Latvia and 33 via Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of daily stats indicated fluctuated tension at the Belarusian-EU border throughout 2023 with a significant decrease by the end of the year and in January 2024. Starting from February, illegal border crossings have been on the rise again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2023, the interior ministers of Poland and the Baltic States warned that they would close the border with Belarus in case of a surge in illegal migration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
